Font - While I (F20) was at work last night, my mum frantically called me while I was on shift, telling me that while she let my 3 lovebirds out, one of them (Her name is Luna) flew into her bedroom while the ceiling fan was on. She was crying and hysterical, apologising profusely. She said that she's really not in good condition and looks like she might pass away.

Font - I was still at work. and since I was the only one on shift I wasn't able to go home since I was in the middle of running a class. (I work and a sip and paint art studio). I told her to keep me posted and take her to the nearest open vet to try and stabilise her and see what we can do. The vet tried their best, but since they don't specialise in birds they were very limited in what they could do. I spent the rest of my shift trying not to bawl my eyes out and keep positive for the class.

Human body - When I got home, mum said that after taking her to the vet, the only option that we had was to wait until tomorrow when the aviary vets are open.

Font - Fast forward to today, we take her to the vet and turns out she has a broken leg and will need surgery. I'm devastated but I'm so glad that she was able to make it through the night and we were able to get her the help that she needs. Mum turns to me and makes a joke that it looks like I'm going to be spending a lot of money of Luna. I asked her what she meant and she said that the surgery will cost me a lot and wished me good luck with the costs.

Font - I told her that she's my bird, and that I am willing to cover some of the cost, but it was her fault that she let the birds out while the fan was on and that she should be covering the costs since she failed to monitor them closely under her care.

Font - She blew up and said that it's my responsibility as the pet owner and I knew what I was getting myself into when I got birds. I told her that I was aware of the costs that would come with veterinary care for an exotic animal, but she should be helping me with the cost because it happened under her care while I was away. Note: I did not ask her to take my birds out. She did it completely on her own accord.

Font - AITA for telling my mother she should cover the vet bills? UPDATE: We're currently on our way home from the vet! Luna is thankfully fine and does not require surgery! Her leg is in a splint and we'll be down again next Friday to get her splint changed. The vets were amazing with us and did it at a low price for us, so the bill overall was $270!! Mum also ended up paying for it, and apologised for how she was acting. She said she realised she was in the wrong and was scared of admitting th

Font - Upperclass_hobo · 5 days ago Partassipant [1] NTA It's her fault the bird is injured. Depending on where you live, she could be legally on the hook for the vet bills. I don't know if you split the rent but I would withhold it until either she pays, or the equivalent of the vet bills is covered.

Font - cillianellis · 5 days ago Certified Proctologist [26] NTA. Frankly, your mother should be paying 100% of the vet bill as your bird being injured and needing surgery is entirely her fault. I don't even have birds (and am, frankly, a bit frightened of them) but even I immediately was like "uhhhh no of COURSE you don't let a bird out to fly around when the ceiling fan is on"??? Like... this is so obviously a terrible, dangerous idea and I'm shocked that your mother, who apparently has a bird
